简介:Mobileandstationaryenergystoragebyrechargeablebatteriesisatopicofbroadsocietalandeconomicalrelevance.Lithium-ionbattery(LIB)technologyisattheforefrontofthedevelopment,butamassivelygrowingmarketwilllikelyputseverepressureonresourcesandsupplychains.Recently,sodium-ionbatteries(SIBs)havebeenreconsideredwiththeaimofprovidingalower-costalternativethatislesssusceptibletoresourceandsupplyrisks.Onpaper,thereplacementoflithiumbysodiuminabatteryseemsstraightforwardatfirst,butunpredictablesurprisesareoftenfoundinpractice.Whathappenswhenreplacinglithiumbysodiuminelectrodereactions?Thisreviewprovidesastate-of-theartoverviewontheredoxbehaviorofmaterialswhenusedaselectrodesinlithium-ionandsodium-ionbatteries,respectively.Advantagesandchallengesrelatedtotheuseofsodiuminsteadoflithiumarediscussed.
