Multiplexed 16 × 16 Li-Ion Cell Measurements Including Internal Resistance for Quality Inspection and Classification

Characterizationandclassificationoflithium-ionbatteries(LIB)areofhighrelevanceforcellandbatteryproducers,especiallywiththerisingdemandsonLIBsforelectricvehicleapplications.Wepresentacompactmeasurementstationwith256multiplexedchannelstomeasuretheopen-circuitvoltage(OCV)andthealternatingcurrentinternalresistance(ACIR)ofatrayof256cylindricalcells.FourdifferentcelltypesweredistinguishedbasedontheACIRvaluesrangingbetween11and22Ω.Themeasurementstationperformancewasassessedbasedonthecell-fixturerecontactingerrorandtheelectronicnoiseofthechannels.Severalcalibrationworkflowsofdifferentcomplexitywereevaluated.Datacorrectionforthemeasurestationwasdonebyatwo-termcalibrationprocedure,includingashortandgaincorrection.Thisresultedina67%improvementontherealpartofACIRand83%ontheimaginarypartbothcomparedtoabench-top-basedreferencesystem.Electromagneticfiniteelementmethod(FEM)modelingwasdonetomodelthecablesandthecellfixture,includingdifferentwirelengths.Thestateofhealth(SoH)ofcycledcellswascomputed,andtheircorrelationtoACIRwasdiscussed,includingtheelectrochemicalinterpretationbasedonanequivalentelectriccircuitmodel.Overall,weshowhowthismultiplexedmeasurementstationcanbeusedforclassificationandLIBqualitycontrolinbatterymanufacturing.
